Reflection: Upon listening to my final track, I have learned a tremendous amount regarding chords,
melodies, different techniques and shortcuts that has allowed me to be creative. The feel that I was aiming for in my final track was of a modern day RPG.
Rhythm and Bass:
I wanted to create a R&B and hip hop type of rhythm. I used two different type of basses but with the same type of smooth energy. I played the bass by hand using the MIDI sequencer. Then using the sampler I modified the effects such as the cutoff and reso in filter 2. I also made sure to add a 1/16 swing D to the kick drum and 1/8 swing to the hihats.
Harmony :
Operating using Key C
I wanted to keep the chords simple, and constant.
I started with chords C Dm Esus2 F Gadd9 B and C#m
then ended with Eb sus2 E F#add9. In my experience music from most RPG games have this same monotone collection of chords, so I wanted to capture that same feel. The overall goal was to allow the melody to stand out more. Hence why I chose to use bells as the instrument. Bells create that spacey euphoric energy found when playing most video games. I started the melody from the G key.
Audio/Synth/Sampler:
I’m glad to say I was able ot make a good usage of all three. The audio loop is one of my favorite parts on the 2nd selction. It carrys the rest of the track so well, the point was to create another percussive element to blend well with the drums. The sampler helped me created an even more funkier bass as mentioned in the bass section.
Processing:
The mixing process for the final track was pretty simple. Following technique from our previous lessons. I used an EQ and compressor for all the tracks to make sure everything sounds cohesive. For the audio loops I used Bus 6 and Bus 7 and added Reverb and an eq to ensure the loop doesn’t over power the rest of the track.
